Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)

A VLAN is broadcast domain defined by software. A network switch that supports VLANs can have separate broadcast domains for different types of users. For example, an office can put web servers

Security is the biggest advantage of a VLAN. Separating a less secure userbase from a production base by putting them on different VLANs will keep a malicious actor from accessing the production servers by connecting to the less secure VLAN.
